United Nations Security Council members gave the green light to a US resolution removing restrictions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his Washington trip next week.
Sharaa was named provisional head of state after leading an insurgent campaign that drove out Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, ending 13 years of domestic strife.
America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" since Assad was deposed.
Previously, he faced global penalties as the leader of the Muslim faction HTS, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. America delisted HTS from a list of international terrorist organizations in July.
Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of the penalties, posting on social media: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and allied countries for their support of Syria and its people."
President Sharaa's presidential meeting at the start of the week occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader demonstrated "substantial headway" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.
The pair met initially during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip on a tour of the region.
Following that encounter, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" with a "very strong past".
His Islamist group HTS was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria prior to breaking relations during 2016.
This week's diplomatic engagement will not be Sharaa's first trip to the United States during this period. During September, he emerged as the initial Syrian president to speak before the global assembly at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.
In his speech, he said Syria was "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" and demonstrated unity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
