The President of Ukraine Zelenskyy has declared he is ready to conduct a national election during the current war, if Ukraine's parliament and foreign partners allow it. This comment is a response to claims from the U.S. President that he was refusing to relinquish control.
Clearly annoyed by the remarks from abroad, Zelenskyy underscored that "This question for the population of Ukraine, not for individuals from foreign states, with all appropriate respect to our partners."
Nonetheless, he vowed to explore options for holding a election in the next few months. "Because this question is brought up by the leader of the United States, our ally, I will respond directly: understand, I am prepared for elections," Zelenskyy stated on Tuesday night.
"Furthermore, I am asking ... the United States to help me, potentially in conjunction with European colleagues, to ensure safety for the polls, and subsequently within the following 60-90 day period Ukraine will be prepared to organize the elections. I personally have the will and readiness for this," he added.
The comments were voiced by Trump in a wide-ranging interview published by Politico earlier on Tuesday. "Ukraine haven't had an election in a considerable period," stated the U.S. president. "Consider this, they claim to be a democratic nation, but it reaches a point where it's no longer democratic any more."
Zelenskyy's five-year term came to an end in May of last year, but the Ukrainian constitution prohibits elections in a time of wartime. Even, his political opponents have consistently argued that security and practical factors prevent holding an election during hostilities.
"Doing so would only be detrimental," commented a lawmaker from the Holos party. "He's the supreme military commander, and the country is in a state where we don't have that option, regardless of disagreements we might have with him. It would only aid the adversary," he continued.
Zelenskyy identified two major problems that need solving: the practical issue of permitting soldiers, millions of displaced people, and those living under occupation to participate, and secondly, how to lawfully conduct a vote when a state of war is ongoing.
He sought counsel from partner nations on safeguarding the elections, and from MPs on how to modify the constitution to allow a election. "{I am awaiting proposals from partners, I am expecting proposals from our parliamentarians, and I am willing to go to the elections," said Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy was speaking while returning to Ukraine after completing a round of talks to several European capitals. This comes as the U.S. administration has reportedly been increasing pressure on Kyiv to accept a ceasefire agreement.
Earlier, Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., suggested at a conference that Zelenskyy was extending the war due to fears of losing power. He also suggested that his father might "disengage" from Ukraine if the hostilities persists. "{It's not true. But it's not exactly wrong," said Trump, when asked about his son's statement.
Reports indicate that the U.S. has floated the idea Ukraine should give up the eastern territories to achieve peace, a move that would be deeply unpopular within Ukraine. Furthermore, there is currently no sign that Russia is prepared to agree to any deal, even one that might appear beneficial to Moscow.
