UK Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory Roster with 11 Countries

Toxic substance alert sign

The UK Foreign Office has included eleven new destinations to its travel alert list concerning the risks of industrial alcohol contamination from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

This expanded advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol toxicity.

Only recently, authorities had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, after a number of notable cases such as the tragic loss of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can result in blindness or loss of life within 12–48 hours.

What is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a toxic substance commonly utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This substance is not intended for human consumption.

While it is inherently formed during the manufacture of spirits, commercial firms lower it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the purification method.

Yet in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into spirits to save money, and since it is flavorless and smell-free, it is impossible to detect.

Government Advice for Travellers

Authorities minister a senior official emphasized that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of industrial alcohol contamination.

"If you're drinking spirits abroad, choose reputable establishments and avoid local brews or free shots," the minister said.

"If something feels off, for example a fatigue that's far more intense than usual or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."

The full list of countries noted as presenting a danger of methanol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
