Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and gamers have encountered a variety of interesting creations from small studios. Yet, one stands out for its quirky concept. Titled Unko Technica, this old-school styled side-scrolling game lets you play a protagonist that is actually a dung striving to navigate to a commode. For those curious, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."
The gameplay is straightforward: press a jump control. In one hundred fifty challenges, encounter boss fights and visit a shop to purchase customizations for your fecal avatar.
Plan your jumps carefully, as a mistake means restarting the level. Leap on bubbles to launch the poop to new heights, traverse crumbling surfaces, and touch switches to reveal secret routes. Earn currency to purchase more difficult game content as the action gets crazy.
Graphically, the experience shows off vibrant environments and catchy background music. The retro art featuring moving basic polygons may remind fans of beloved games like Earthbound.
Even though tough to think of similar titles where you play as a coiled turd, video games have long incorporated fecal matter. As an illustration, in Death Stranding, players make throwables from character waste. Examples include Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved employ dung as fertilizer. Unsurprisingly, such content appears a lot in Obsidian's adventure The Stick of Truth.
Putting aside its silly idea, Unko Technica has already received significant awards, including winning at a major publisher's game competition in 2023. A playable preview is accessible currently on Steam, with the full game scheduled to debut on Steam this November.
